The questions we get asked most often…

—

Introduction.

Pivotal is an owner-led brand identity studio based in Hampshire. We work with businesses across the UK that have reached a turning point: the moment when the brand no longer reflects the business behind it. We set brands in motion. Through strategy, identity and motion, we build brands that are built to last and impossible to ignore.

Q:

What does Pivotal do?

Pivotal is an owner-led brand identity studio. The work runs across four areas, all led by the same senior hand.

Brand Identity. The foundation, and where most projects start. It begins with the thinking: who the business is, who it serves, how it should show up, and, on bigger jobs, how the parts fit together (brand architecture). That becomes the system: logo, colour, typography, iconography, tone of voice and full guidelines, built to hold up as the business grows. Strategy and tone of voice are part of building the identity, not separate phases bolted on top.

Motion & Film. Animation, brand film and motion graphics, built into the identity from the start rather than bolted on afterwards. It's the part of the offer most brand studios can't match.

Web & Social. Brand-led websites and social content, so the identity carries into the places people actually meet the brand. Built in Framer, with custom development brought in where a project needs it.

Fractional Creative Director. Ongoing senior creative direction on a monthly retainer, for organisations that want a trusted hand on the brand as it evolves, for a fraction of a full-time creative director's salary.

Q:

Who does Pivotal work with?

Businesses at a turning point. That might be a company that has outgrown its original identity, a business entering a new market or launching a new division, or an organisation that simply knows it needs to be taken more seriously.

The common thread is ambition. Clients come to Pivotal because they want to change something, and they want to do it properly.

We work across a wide range of sectors: Construction and Infrastructure, Professional Services, Technology and SaaS, Finance and Fintech, Education and EdTech, Health and Wellbeing, Sports and Leisure, Retail and Fashion, Hospitality and Food and Beverage, Media and Entertainment, Charity and NGOs, Manufacturing, Property and Real Estate, Travel and Tourism, Energy and Environment, Automotive, Start-ups and Scale-ups, Supply Chain and Logistics, Life Sciences and Pharma.

The best brand thinking often comes from bringing a fresh perspective to a familiar industry.

Q:

What makes Pivotal different from other brand identity studios?

Most brand identity studios work in static design. Pivotal works at the intersection of brand identity and motion.

That matters because modern brands don't only exist on a business card or a set of brand guidelines. They live in motion, on social media, in video and animation.

A brand that is designed to move from the start performs better across all of those touchpoints than one that has motion added as an afterthought.

Motion design is not a separate service at Pivotal. It is part of how we think about brand from the beginning.

Q:

Why work with an owner-led studio?

When you brief Pivotal, you work directly with the person who owns and runs the studio. There are no account managers passing information between you and the people doing the work. No briefing chains. No dilution of thinking.

The person you speak to in the first conversation is the person who builds your brand. That has a real impact on the quality and consistency of the output.

Q:

What is Pivotal's process?

Every project is different, but most follow the same five stages.

Understand. We go beyond the brief. Before any creative work begins, we spend time with the business, the audience and the competitive landscape, understanding not just what a client does, but what drives them, what they stand for and where they want to go. Usually this means conversations with the people who know the business best, a honest look at what exists already, and proper research into the market it sits in.

Define. The strategic groundwork: what the brand stands for, how it should be perceived, and the direction everything else will follow. This is the stage that gives every later decision a reason behind it.

Create. Visual and verbal directions are developed and presented with the strategic thinking attached, not as options to choose between blindly. Clients are part of shaping the work at every stage, not just signing it off at the end.

Refine and Deliver. The chosen direction is built out into a complete identity system with proper guidelines, so the client's team can use it confidently without needing to ask Pivotal every time.

Activate. For many clients, this is where the relationship continues rather than ends. Pivotal offers an ongoing Fractional Creative Director retainer, providing senior creative oversight as the brand rolls out across web, social and everyday communications, and as the business continues to grow.

Q:

What happens after the brand launches?

A brand is not a one-off project. As a business grows, it needs creative leadership to keep pace: new campaigns, new channels, new hires who need to understand the brand, decisions that come up every month rather than once a year.

That is what Pivotal's Fractional Creative Director retainer is built for. Rather than hiring a full-time creative director, clients have ongoing access to senior creative direction and oversight as their brand evolves, on a flexible monthly basis.

It is not a requirement, and not every client needs it. But it is always there as an option to support your brand in the longer term.

Q:

Does Pivotal do rebrands?

Yes. Rebranding is some of the most demanding and most rewarding work we do.

A good rebrand does not abandon what a business stands for. It evolves the identity to better reflect what the business has become. That requires careful strategic thinking before any creative work begins.

We have guided businesses through rebrands of varying complexity: from straightforward logo and guidelines refreshes to full group rebrands involving brand architecture, vehicle livery, signage systems, new websites and divisional identities.

Q:

Does Pivotal only work with businesses in Hampshire?

No. Pivotal is based in Hampshire on the South Coast, but we work with businesses across the UK, and beyond. Most projects are managed remotely, with in-person meetings arranged where they add value. Distance has not been a barrier to good creative work for a long time.

Q:

What do clients say about Pivotal?

Clients consistently highlight the combination of strategic thinking and creative quality, and the value of working directly with the person responsible for the work at every stage.

LCN Legal, world-leading specialists in intercompany agreements, described the identity work as capturing "the ethos of our company beautifully," and were so satisfied with the concepts developed that they selected a second logo from the process to brand a separate division of the business.

Opal Hosting described the experience as "so refreshing to work with a creative agency who understand and listen," calling the collaboration "absolutely brilliant."

Paua, a pioneering impact protection materials company with whom we have worked since 2017, say they are "always blown away by the creative" and note that the studio has developed a depth of understanding of their brand that is "hard to find."

Q:

Experience and recognition

Pivotal is built on over two decades of creative industry experience, including senior creative direction at leading agencies across brand, motion and campaign work for global clients including Bosch eBike Systems, The North Face, O'Neill Wetsuits, Shimano and the RNLI.

Prior to founding Pivotal, Richard Nicklen served as Creative Director at Brandwave Marketing, where his work for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and the RNLI was shortlisted for Marketing Excellence Awards. The Clipper "Achieve Something Remarkable" campaign has continued to run across London Underground stations and at race events worldwide since 2012.

That experience now sits at the heart of every Pivotal project.

Pivotal hasn't won any awards yet, because we haven't entered any. That changes this year.

How do I start a conversation with Pivotal?

Get in touch at hello@pivotalbrands.studio or give us a call on +44 (0)23 9355 3462.

Whether you have a detailed brief or you are still working out what you need, we are happy to talk it through.

Q:

What is brand identity, and is it the same as a logo?

No. A logo is one part of a brand identity. Brand identity is the full system that tells the world who a business is and what it stands for. That system typically includes a logo and logo variants, a colour palette, a typography system, a tone of voice, and a set of usage guidelines that ensure everything stays consistent.

For larger projects it also covers things like brand architecture, verbal identity, motion guidelines, and assets for digital, print and physical environments. A logo without the thinking behind it is decoration. A brand identity is the foundation a business builds on.

Q:

How much does brand identity work cost?

It depends on the scope of the project, and there is no honest single answer that applies to every business. A logo refresh and a full group rebrand involving brand architecture, motion and a website are different investments entirely.

What we can say is this: every project starts with a clear conversation about scope and budget before any work begins. There are no hidden costs, no vague estimates that creep upwards, and no deliverables added that a client does not need.

If you have a budget in mind, tell us. If you are still working that out, we can help you think it through. Either way, get in touch and we will give you a clear, honest figure before anything is agreed.

Q:

How long does a brand identity project take?

A focused identity project typically runs over eight to twelve weeks from kick-off to delivery of final assets. Larger projects involving web development, motion content, environmental design or multiple divisions will run longer.

We are always transparent about timelines from the outset. We do not compress schedules in ways that compromise the quality of the work.
